I think, timers are absolutely essential for this type of apps!
Ideally, we should be able to switch from "count down"/"count up" modes.
Example: I want to meditate for 15 min/day. I can:
a) use count down timer with set 15 mins, which gives me some kind of 'beep' at the end;
b) use count up timer that will just track time and stop manually; in this case logged time will show, for example, 150% of the daily goal. If less, I can continue later, until achieve a goal.
More advance usage. I want to master a language, and my goal is 100 hours. I can use count up timer every time when I do some exercises, which will add to a bigger goal. The same could be useful for long-term sports goals, and basically for any study or training process/habit.
Not to mention, that adjustable count down timers will allow to forget about Promodoro-like apps.
